Terracotta sculpture 'Princess and the Pea' designed in 1913 by Kai Nielsen (painter and sculptor 1882-1925) for Kahler, Denmark. White glaze finish (tin glaze).
Kai Nielsen's small sculptures were sold in the U.S. by trading company Zacho & Co.. But this particular figure, the princess and the pea was required removed from the store. Women's organizations believed it was immoral. The figure was, however, subsequently sold in large numbers to the Americans at Copenhagen Airport. Signed HAK Danmark. Very good vintage condition, some crazinng on the base, as usual seen on these items.
