Alexandre Kostanda (Vallauris, 1950s): Incised Stoneware Table Lamp
A beautiful and historically important ceramic table lamp base by the celebrated French-Polish potter Alexandre Kostanda. Kostanda’s return to Vallauris in 1949 and the opening of his own studio in 1953 cemented his place as one of the most influential figures of the region’s Modernist ceramics revival.
This piece showcases his mastery of line and texture. The tall, cylindrical stoneware body is decorated with a fine, incised (sgraffito) geometric pattern, highlighted by subtle washes of ochre and light blue glaze.
The decoration is a perfect example of the abstract, graphic style of the mid-20th-century Vallauris aesthetic.
