Flavio Poli: Master of the Submerged Aesthetic
This imposing glass vase is a quintessential piece of Mid-Century Italian design, attributed to the renowned glass artist Flavio Poli (1900–1980), who served as the artistic director for Seguso Vetri d'Arte for nearly three decades.
The piece utilizes the signature Sommerso (or 'submerged') technique, which Poli championed throughout the 1950s and 60s. The process, requiring immense skill from the Muranese glassblowers, involves encasing multiple layers of vibrant, contrasting colored glass—in this case, amber, and blue—within an exterior layer of heavy, perfectly clear crystal. The resulting block form acts like a lens, magnifying and distorting the internal colors to create a three-dimensional depth and a glowing visual effect.
