A superb and rare early stoneware sculpture depicting a prehistoric Mammoth, designed by the influential artist Gertrud Kudielka (1896-1984) for L. Hjorth Keramik on Bornholm, Denmark.
This powerful piece is an exceptional example of Danish Art Pottery from the 1930s. Kudielka's work from this period is particularly sought after, as she was the factory's first official artist, spearheading an artistic transformation at L. Hjorth. The figure is robust, showcasing the quality and texture of the stoneware, often finished in a sophisticated, subtle glaze that highlights the sculpting.
Kudielka's animal figures are celebrated for their expressive, stylized forms that capture the spirit of the Art Deco era's love for natural form and early modernist abstraction.
