Gunnar Nylund: The Early Rörstrand Years
This charming horse sculpture is a significant piece from the early career of Gunnar Nylund at the Rörstrand porcelain and stoneware factory, where he served as artistic director from 1931 to 1955. During this formative period, Nylund focused on creating highly tactile and expressive animal forms, utilizing the robust texture of chamotte stoneware to great effect.
The horse possesses a powerful, stylized silhouette, a hallmark of early Swedish Modernist sculpture. The surface is brought to life by vibrant glazes—a distinctive feature of the animal series—which pool and break over the grog of the clay body, enhancing the sense of texture and dimension.
The piece is signed with the early Rörstrand 'R' mark and Gunnar Nylund’s original 'GN' monogram, placing it firmly in the desirable 1930s period. It is an excellent example of the high-quality studio work that established Nylund as a major figure in Scandinavian art pottery.
