Superb and rare Art Deco Sgraffito vase designed by master ceramist Josef Ekberg for Gustavsberg Porcelain Factory in Sweden, dated 1921.
This striking piece features a transitional design between the Art Nouveau style and the emerging classicism of Swedish Grace (Nordic Art Deco). The body is finished in a beautiful powder blue sponge-glaze, over which a floral motif is carved using the sgraffito technique—where the top layer of glaze is scratched away to reveal the contrasting color beneath.
Ekberg (1877-1945) was a leading designer for Gustavsberg from 1889 and served as Artistic Director (1908-1917). His sgraffito technique, developed in collaboration with Gunnar Wennerberg, was presented at the 1900 Paris World Exhibition and represents a key moment in Scandinavian art pottery.
