Rare 12-Inch Kai Nielsen Terracotta Sculpture: Eve and the Apple (c. 1920s)
A significant piece of Danish art history, this terracotta sculpture, Eve and the Apple, was created by the nationally renowned sculptor Kai Nielsen (1882–1924) for Kähler Keramik (HAK). Nielsen, recognized as Denmark's most prominent sculptor of his time, collaborated with the Kähler factory in 1922 to produce a small, exclusive series of around 20 terracotta figurines scaled for private homes. This collaboration successfully merged monumental art with domestic ceramics.
The figure stands 12 inches tall and captures Nielsen's distinctive, powerful interpretation of the female form and classical allegory. This beautiful sculpture is a classic of the transitional period in Danish design, moving from Art Nouveau toward Art Deco.
