Mari Simmulson 'Mariana' Vase, Model 4323 | Upsala-Ekeby (1958-60)
An impressive and large-scale example of Swedish Mid-Century Modern design. This striking vase is from the renowned 'Mariana' series, designed by the celebrated ceramicist Mari Simmulson (1911–2000) for Upsala-Ekeby.
The Mariana series, produced between 1958 and 1960, is characteristic of Simmulson's expressive style. As a leading artist for Upsala-Ekeby from 1942 to 1972, Mari Simmulson, alongside other masters like Anna-Lisa Thomson and Vicke Lindstrand, helped define the golden age of Swedish studio pottery.
Simmulson was educated in Tallinn and worked at Arabia in Finland and the esteemed Gustavsberg factory with Wilhelm Kåge before her long tenure at Upsala-Ekeby.
This piece, a substantial model in the series, showcases the robust form and decorative detail that collectors seek. It serves beautifully as a standalone statement piece or as a functional vessel for a large arrangement.
