This is a museum-quality piece of Finnish design history: an early and substantial "Orkidea" (Orchid) art glass sculpture, designed by Timo Sarpaneva for Iittala and distinctly signed and dated "55".

The "Orkidea" design was an immediate sensation upon its debut. It was a clear winner of the Grand Prix at the 10th Triennale di Milano in 1954 and was simultaneously named the "Most Beautiful Object of the Year" by the American magazine House Beautiful. This particular piece is highly desirable as it is marked with the year of production, 1955, making it one of the earliest examples created immediately following its award-winning exhibition. Later production runs were typically marked only with a serial number. The piece is a large and heavy example, weighing 2.3 kilos and standing {10} inches tall.

This iconic vessel exemplifies the organic modernism of Mid-Century Scandinavian design, appearing as a delicate, melting form captured in clear glass.
