Valdemar Petersen Bing & Grondahl Stoneware 1960s
A curated duo of Danish Mid-Century stoneware by master ceramicist Valdemar Petersen for Bing & Grøndahl. This set perfectly illustrates Petersen's command over organic form and reactive 'variegated' glazes.
Valdemar Petersen was an alchemist of the kiln. This set showcases his ability to use mineral oxides to create 'living' surfaces. The way the green and yellow tones emerge from the brown base on the bowl's exterior is a hallmark of his best work at Bing & Grøndahl during the 1960s.
The Vase (No. 7229): Features a structured, impressed relief decoration. The tobacco-brown glaze pools beautifully in the indentations, creating a rich, rhythmic texture.
Height: 5 inches (13 cm) | Diameter: 6.3 inches (16 cm)
The Shallow Bowl (no. 230): Finished in a luminous variegated glaze. While primarily brown, the rim features a distinct beige-yellow highlight, and the outer walls reveal a 'striped' effect where moss green and ochre tones shine through the glaze.
Height: 1.5 inches (4 cm) | Diameter: 6.5 inches (16.5 cm)
Provenance & Markings: Both pieces are in excellent vintage condition. They bear the impressed VP monogram, the iconic B&G (Three Towers) hallmark, and 'Denmark'. A quintessential set for the Scandinavian Modernist interior."
The Glaze: Earthy Tones with Vibrant Highlights "Both the vase and the shallow bowl are finished in a sophisticated variegated art glaze. The primary tobacco-brown glaze is deep and lustrous, but it is the reactive highlights that define this set:
The Bowl: Features a beautiful 'halo' of beige and golden-yellow spark along the rim. The outer wall is finished with a vertical striped impression—as the glaze melts and 'breaks' over these ridges, vibrant flashes of moss green and ochre shine through from beneath the surface.
The Vase (Model 7229): Complements the bowl perfectly with a matching brown-shaded glaze that pools deeply into the impressed decorative motifs, creating a sense of ancient, organic relief.
