Erik Höglund Swedish Modernist (1932–1998)
Erik Höglund was a revolutionary Swedish artist who trained at the School of Fine Arts in Stockholm. While he was a talented painter, sculptor, and designer of both furniture and ceramics, he is best known for his work in glass.
Höglund served as the head designer for Boda Glassworks from 1953 to 1973. During this time, he became a major innovator of Swedish glass art, pioneering the iconic rustic, bubble-filled, and raw aesthetic that defined the mid-century period. He is particularly famous for his heavy, hand-forged iron candlesticks and chandeliers adorned with thick glass pendants and colorful rondels.
Following his influential period at Boda, he continued to create highly collectible work for glassworks including Pukeberg, Åhus, Transjö, and Strömbergshyttan in the late 1970s. Höglund's work is represented in major museums across Europe and the United States.
