Exceptional Unik Art Deco Square Flambé Vase by Gunnar Nylund for Rörstrand (c. 1930s)
This is a rare piece of early Swedish Modernism from the iconic designer Gunnar Nylund (1904-1997), crafted during his influential period at Rörstrand (1931-1958). This vase represents the experimental "Flambé" series.
This piece is truly a unique (unik) work, featuring a striking combination of form, glaze, and decoration:
Form: A compact, architectural square-form vase providing a unique canvas.
Decorator & Technique: The decoration is attributed to Willborg. It features exquisite, freehand-painted leopards—one on the front face and one on the back—each figure individually realized with dynamic movement.
Glaze & Gold: The leopards are painted in the deep, flowing ALP Flambé glaze, allowing the glaze's rich, fiery hues to define the animal's texture. Adding to its luxury, the detailing is subtly accentuated with organic gold lines, which highlight the contours of the animals in a freehand, non-geometric style, perfectly blending the Art Deco era's opulence with the handmade quality of studio ceramics.
This vase is an important, singular piece for any serious collection of Scandinavian Art Deco or high-end studio ceramics.
