This impressive and rare AXK stoneware bowl is a magnificent example of Swedish Mid-Century Modernism by the celebrated designer Gunnar Nylund (1904–1997) for Rörstrand.
Nylund, the Artistic Director for Rörstrand through the 1940s and 50s, is globally renowned for his sculptural forms and sophisticated, experimental glazes. The AXK model is one of his most sought-after forms, particularly in this exceptionally large size, which commands a powerful presence on any surface.
A Study in Glaze and Form
The bowl features an evocative brown and dusty blue speckled glaze that captures the subtle, earthy palette and timeless elegance of 1950s Scandinavian design. The rich, dynamic texture of the glaze beautifully contrasts with the elegant, flowing curves of the vessel's stoneware form.
This piece is marked with the authentic Rörstrand factory stamp, the three crowns mark, the designer's monogram GN, and the model code AXK.
Important Condition Note: Factory Second (2nd Sorting)
Condition: Excellent Vintage Condition overall.
Please Note: This piece is a factory second, marked as such on the base. This is due to a few pinhead-sized burst bubbles within the glaze, primarily inside the bowl (see detailed images).
As is common with experimental art pottery of this era, minor glaze irregularities did occur. This designation does not detract from the piece’s visual impact, size, or authenticity as a masterpiece of Mid-Century design.
