RARE Signed Helge Christoffersen Original Studio Stoneware Bust | Danish Modern Figurative Sculpture | Royal Copenhagen Artist | Jais Nielsen Legacy
This is a rare and high-quality unique sculpture from the Danish master ceramicist and sculptor, Helge Christoffersen, produced in his Own Studio after leaving Royal Copenhagen in 1954.
A Sculptor's Masterpiece:
Christoffersen was not merely a potter but a formally trained sculptor, a prodigy who received the Academy's small gold medal in 1948. He studied under the legendary Utzon Frank and served as an assistant to major figures of the era, including J. F. Willumsen and the most important ceramic sculptor of the time, Jais Nielsen, at Royal Copenhagen. His work, like the three reliefs hanging in the Danish Parliament, is noted for its imaginative and expressive quality.
The Work: This stoneware bust—often referred to as "Woman with Scarf"—is a commanding example of his independent studio work. It is hand-modeled, demonstrating the artist's high manual skill and characteristic expressive form. The partially glazed stoneware creates a beautiful contrast between the rich, muted glaze and the raw, tactile surface of the clay, a sought-after aesthetic in high-end Scandinavian Modern art.
This original piece embodies the most imaginative and expressive side of Christoffersen's short but brilliant career.
