Ivan Weiss: Scandinavian Design Meets Japanese Craft
This impressive, tall stoneware vase is a high-end piece designed by Ivan Weiss (b. 1946), one of the most important ceramic artists employed by the Royal Copenhagen factory from 1966 to 2004. Weiss's early years were spent studying under Nils Thorsson, but his style was profoundly transformed after he undertook a crucial apprenticeship in Japan in 1970.
Design and Glazing
This vase, produced from 1974, embodies the mature style of Weiss. The robust form is accented by a dramatic yet controlled glaze application, featuring rich cobalt blue and warm brown/yellow streaks over a natural grey stoneware background. The complex, layered glazes and the reliance on heavy stoneware (Stentøj) are clear influences from traditional Japanese studio ceramics, which Weiss expertly integrated into the vocabulary of Danish Mid-Century Modern design.
Provenance
The piece is signed with the designer's IW monogram, the full Royal Copenhagen mark, and the model number 22558, confirming it as a genuine piece from his successful period at the factory.
