The "Nicotine Troll" (Nikotintrolden): A Unique Saxbo Masterpiece
Presenting a rare and significant piece of Danish ceramic history: a unique sculptural ashtray designed by the celebrated sculptor Jens Jacob Bregnø (1877–1947) for the world-renowned Saxbo studio.
Known colloquially as the "Nicotine Devil" or "Nicotine Troll," this specific form is documented by the Vejen Art Museum in Denmark. While the original design dates to the mid-1930s, this particular version was likely produced for a prestigious exhibition in 1943 at the art shop of August With’s successor.
The Art of the Glaze: The sculpture is finished in a masterful glaze by Nathalie Krebs, the chemical engineer whose revolutionary techniques defined the Saxbo aesthetic. The depth and character of the glaze on this piece perfectly complement Bregnø’s expressive, Art Deco sculptural style.
Saxbo History: Founded in 1929 by Nathalie Krebs and Gunnar Nylund, Saxbo stands as the most influential pioneer of modern Danish stoneware. Over decades, Krebs collaborated with giants of Danish design, including Axel Salto and Eva Stæhr-Nielsen, creating glazes inspired by nature—such as the famous 'Hare Fur'—that remain unsurpassed in the world of ceramics.
