Jens Jacob Bregnø L. Hjorth Incense Holder

A rare and highly collectible example of Danish Art Deco functional art, designed in 1935 by the noted sculptor Jens Jacob Bregnø (1877–1946) for L. Hjorth, Bornholm.

This model (657) is a triumph of 1930s whimsical design. Depicting an exoticized head, it is engineered to serve as an incense burner where smoke elegantly curls from the nostrils. Bregnø was a master of sculptural form, and his work for Hjorth is distinguished by its sharp Art Deco lines and characterful expression.

The figurine is finished in a deep, lustrous oxblood glaze, a technical feat that pays homage to ancient Chinese "sang de boeuf" ceramics—a popular aesthetic during the Danish Art Deco movement.
