Jørgen Mogensen: Pioneer of Robust Modernism

This powerful stoneware vase is a hallmark design by Jørgen Mogensen (b. 1927), a key figure in Royal Copenhagen's Mid-Century Art Pottery studio. Employed directly after his education in 1949, Mogensen was given the freedom to experiment, resulting in the "robust forms and simplified abstract shapes" that define his collectible stoneware.

Design and Technique

The vase features a clean, architectural form decorated with a complex sung glaze, a highly technical and desirable finish that produces deep, shifting colors. The surface is further enhanced by a stylized fish motif rendered in low relief on all four sides. This combination of heavy, sculptural form, advanced glazing technique, and abstract decoration perfectly encapsulates the innovative spirit of Danish ceramic design in the 1950s and 60s. The piece's substantial 2.3-kilo weight speaks to its quality and craftsmanship.

Provenance

The vase is fully authenticated on the base with the designer's impressed JM monogram, the model number 21926, and the full Royal Copenhagen stamp, confirming it as a factory-first piece from his tenure.

Condition: Presented in excellent vintage condition.
