Provenance and Design History
This superb and highly collectible piece of Danish metalware is a Disko Metal Pencil Holder created by the renowned designer Just Andersen (1884-1943). Manufactured in 1926, this piece is a striking representation of the elegance and stylistic principles of the European Art Deco movement. Just Andersen's work was highly sought after, with his creations being sold internationally in his own shops from London to New York.
Signature Material and Craftsmanship
The holder is cast in Disko Metal, the designer's own signature alloy. This pewter-like compound is named after Disko Bay in Greenland and is recognized for its distinct, high-quality matte, silvery finish. The piece features beautiful figurative relief decoration on two sides, each depicting a young woman holding a dove—a classic motif symbolizing peace and sophistication. A subtle, charming design detail is that the two picture panels are intentionally not identical. The metal retains its lovely, original patina.
