This commanding, triangular glazed earthenware bowl is a signature design by Mari Simmulson, one of the most influential figures in post-war Swedish ceramic art. Simmulson, who trained at the Art School in Tallin and worked at Arabia and Gustavsberg (alongside Wilhelm Kåge), served as the leading artist for Upsala-Ekeby from 1942 to 1972.1
The bowl is heavily constructed and features her characteristic modernist figural decoration. It is a fine example from the company that, from its founding at the turn of the 20th Century until its closure in 1973, produced work by artists like Anna-Lisa Thomson and Vicke Lindstrand.
