Daniel Folkmann Andersen: The Artistic Heart of Michael Andersen & Søn
This antique vase, dating to approximately 1910, is a significant piece from the early production of Michael Andersen & Søn on the island of Bornholm, Denmark. It was designed by Daniel Folkmann Andersen (1885–1959), the son of the founder, who was the company’s foremost creative mind. Daniel’s training and global inspiration (including studies in Vienna) allowed him to shape the company’s output in the sophisticated Danish Art Nouveau style, known locally as Skønvirke.
Glaze Innovation and Design
The piece is notable for its rich, rare oxblood (Sang-de-Boeuf) glaze, contrasting dramatically with the mottled grey or celadon-toned base glaze. The elegant, flaring form reflects the influence of Secessionist and naturalistic design movements prevalent at the time. This innovation in both form and glaze set the stage for Daniel Andersen's later work, including the development of the famous Persia technique glaze.

The vase is authentically signed on the base with the early M A & S mark and model number 1318.
