Knud Kyhn: The Sculptor of Wildlife
This substantial stoneware plate or shallow bowl is a prime example of the figurative work of Knud Kyhn (1888–1969), one of Royal Copenhagen's most important 20th-century ceramicists. Kyhn, a painter and sculptor, spent decades mastering the art of the animal motif, which he applied to both individual figurines and functional stoneware like this piece.
Design and Technique
The plate is decorated with a powerfully executed panther in high relief, a design that uses the depth and texture of the stoneware to great effect. The piece features rich brown and beige glazes that pool in the recesses and break over the raised lines, defining the muscular form of the panther. Kyhn's stoneware pieces are celebrated for blending modern design principles with a deep appreciation for nature.
Provenance
The base is clearly marked with the Royal Copenhagen stamp, the model number 21445, and the designer's incised initials kk, confirming its authenticity and factory-first status.
