Ekberg started working at Gustavsberg Porcelain Factory aT the age of 12. He helped the painters and became himself a painter/decorator. He helped developing the special sgrafitto technique, which was a great success for Gustavsberg. Subsequently Josef Ekberg developed a new lustre glaze, which is used for this piece. Also the lustre glaze became a major international success for the factory. Ekberg was artistic director from 1908-17. He was followed by another iconic person - namely William Kåge.
